Rights impact on Slavery
When the sates had all of the rights to make their own decisions they could choose weather or not they would be a slave state or not. Which influenced slavery a lot.

An important event was when states could choose to be a slave state or not. Another important event was when Abraham Lincoln became the president. The federal government ruled so the states had no decision besides being a free state. Being a part of the federal government would give him the right to ban slavery from the whole country. This decision would influence a lot of different people.
Important People
Abraham Lincoln wanted the federal government to rule because he didn't want to give the states the right to make their own decision about being a slave state or not. He ended up banning slavery for the whole country.
John C. Calhoun was a big supporter of slavery. He wanted the states to be able to make the decision weather they would be a slave state or not. So he was with state rights.
Primary Sources
Kansas-Nebraska Act canceled the Missouri act causing the states to be able to choose if they were free or not.
Missouri Compromise said that all northern states would be free and all southern states would have slavery.
Causes of the civil war
The states vs. federal rights could have helped cause the civil war because the states wanted to be independent and make their own decisions but the government didn't want that. The federal gov. wanted to have control over all. The two couldn't agree on the slave decision.
